A New Direction

I've decided to take this blog in a new direction. I have such a hard time blogging on a regular basis so I need to change it up a bit. I will continue to post about Amorouscents products, promotions, discounts and events. I will also be posting about other things that I am interested in such as cooking, entertaining and travelling. Paraffin Wax v. Soy Wax

Paraffin wax is a heavy hydrocarbon that comes from crude oil. Paraffin waxes are produced by refining or separating the waxes out of crude mineral oils. Obtained from the ground, crude oil is a compositionally varied product, consisting of a mixture of hydrocarbons. Another name for crude oil is fossil fuel. Cruide oil is transported to refneries where it is refined into finished products by complex processes. One of the many products derived from refining is lubricating oil. It is from the lube oil refining process that petroleum waxes are derived. There are three general categories of petroleum wax that are obtained from lube oil refining. They include paraffin, microcrystalline and petrolatum. Paraffin waxes are derived from the light lubricating oil distillates. Paraffin waxes contain predominatly straight-chain hydrocarbons with an average chain length od 20 - 30 carbon atoms. Paraffin wax has a typical melting point between about 47 °C and 64 °C.

Soy wax on the other hand is made from vegtable matter. Soy was is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated. This process dramatically alters the melting point of the oil, making it a solid at room temperature. The leftover bean husks are commonly used as animal feed. Soy was is white in color and comes in pellet and flake forms. This was is mainly used in container candles as it has a lower melting temperature than other waxes such as paraffin and beeswax.

Cure for Sore Throat

When you're having trouble swallowing honey, lemon and cayenne pepper can give you soothing relief. The lemon contracts inflamed tissues and provides Vitamin C. The honey soothes and disinfects while the cayenne pepper stimulates circulation and encourages healing.

Fill a tablespoon halfway with honey and then squeeze a lemon to fill the spoon with juice. Sprinkle 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Put the spoon in your mouth and suck it slowly. Repeat as needed.

Cranberry Tea

I am a tea drinker and I'm always looking for a new tea to try. I came across this recipe for Cranberry Tea and decided to post it for those that enjoy tea as well.

Cranberry Tea
Quart of Cranberry Juice Cocktail
1 1/2 Quart of Water
1 cup of sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
15 whole cloves
1 lemon, thinly sliced
2 2/3 cup freshly brewed tea

In a large soup pot combine cranberry juice, water, sugar, cinnamon sticks and cloves. Bring to a light boil and allow to simmer for ten minues. Next, carefully strain mixture through a wired colander to remove the cinnamon sticks and cloves. Caution, mixture will be very hot. Once this is done, combine your cranberry mixture with the brewed tea. Stir well. Place lemon slices in tea cups and using a ladle carefully pour the fresh hot tea over lemons. Refrigerate leftovers.

I've added heel sticks, soap and sugar glow cubes. I've updated the website to reflect the new product line. I also streamlined our fragrance line. Our best sellers such as Almond Joy, Mango Daquiri, Cool Water and Drakkar are still apart of the fragrance line. Operation Christmas Wish

I was recently contacted by Ryan from RMDesignz to participate in his Operation Christmas Wish. The holidays can be a tough time for a lot of families. Watermelon Agua Fresca

I found this recipe on Oprah and thought the recipe was interesting since you have to use a blender. Traditionally, authentic agua frescas are made by simply mashing fruit with a fork or masher before adding water.

Watermelon Agua Fresca

Serves 2 (makes about 2 1/2 cups)

Ingredients:
3 cups diced seeded watermelon , chilled
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice
Pinch of sea salt
Agave nectar (optional)

Directions: Combine the watermelon, strawberries, lemon juice, and salt in a blender. Blend until smooth. Sweeten with agave nectar, if you like.

Canyon Ranch Spa: Spinach Salad with Strawberry Champagne Vinaigrette

Whenever I go to the spa I always look for something new and refreshing to eat. I also want to be able to make it at home. I found this great recipe on Epicurious.

For marinated apples
1 cup sliced apple (1 small apple)
1/2 cup Apple Cider Vinaigrette

For strawberry Champagne vinaigrette
1/2 cup sliced hulled strawberries
2 tablespoons Champagne vinegar
1 tablespoon sugarPinch salt

For serving
4 cups organic spinach leaves (4 ounces)
4 tablespoons crumbled plain goat cheese (2 ounces)
4 tablespoons dried cranberries
4 teaspoons chopped toasted walnuts

Preparation
Make marinated apples:
In small bowl, combine apple slices and apple cider vinaigrette. Cover and marinate in refrigerator for at least 2 and up to 6 hours.

Make strawberry Champagne vinaigrette:
In blender, purée all ingredients until smooth.

To serve:
In medium bowl, toss together spinach and strawberry Champagne vinaigrette. Mound 1 cup dressed spinach on each plate. With fork or slotted spoon, lift apples from marinade and scatter 1/4 cup over each salad. Top each salad with 1 tablespoon cheese, 1 tablespoon dried cranberries, and 1 teaspoon walnuts.

Blueberry Smoothie

The fragrance created by Usher with Fermenich’s Harry Fremont, has top notes of tangerine, bergamont, kumquat and nutmeg; a heat of violet leaf, lotus flower and saffron, and a drydown of vetiver, oakmoss and suede. The collection includes eau de toilette in two sizes (1.7 oz for $50 and 3.4 oz for $65) , after shave soother (3.4 oz for $40), a shower gel (6.7 oz for $25), and a deodorant (2.6 oz for $16).

Sivananda Yoga Centers posted their Oatmeal Cookies recipe on their website. This is a delicious recipe that I wanted to share.

Sivananda Oatmeal Cookies

Makes about 20 cookies.

Ingredients:
3 1/2 cups oatmeal
2 1/2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 cup raisins
1 cup ground almonds or hazelnuts
3/4 cup oil
1 1/2 cups honey
3/4 cup milk
1/4 tsp. Salt
3/4 tsp. Nutmeg
1 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
1 tbsp. baking powder
Instructions:
Mix wet ingredients. Mix and sift all dry ingredients (except nuts) into the wet ones. Now add the ground nuts. Shape cookies 2 to 3 inches onto greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15-20 minutes

Disney teams up with Carol's Daughter!

I am excited about the new Disney film "The Princess and the Frog", out this fall. This will be the first time that a Disney princess is African American! The film takes place in the bayous of New Orleans. Princess Tiana is voiced by Anika Noni Rose, who starred in Dreamgirls. To mark this momentous occasion, Disney has teamed up with Carol's Daughter to release a limited edition collection of bath and hair products for all the little African American princesses out there. The collection will include a shampoo, conditioner, detangler and bubble bath, all with images of Princess Tiana on the bottle.

The products will be out later this fall and the film will be released around Thanksgiving. Check out the trailer below.

Raspberry Truffle Lotion Bars

Raspberry Truffle Lotion Bars
Makes about four 2.5 ounce bars

Ingredients
1 1/2 ounces Beeswax
1 teaspoon Red Jojoba Wax Beads*
4 ounces Cocoa Butter
2 ounces Babasssu Oil
1 ounce Red Raspberry Seed Oil
1 ounce Passion Flower (Maracuja) Oil
1/4 ounce Raspberry Truffles Fragrance Oil*
Special Equipment Needed1 Heart Shaped Soap Mold

Directions:
In a double boiler, gently melt Beeswax, Jojoba Wax Beads, Babassu Oil, and Cocoa Butter completely. After the oils and waxes are melted, remove them from heat and allow them to cool for a few moments before adding the Passion Flower Oil and Red Raspberry Seed Oil. Stir the mixture well, then add the Raspberry Truffles Fragrance Oil. Carefully pour the mixture into four cavities of the Soap Mold, initially leaving about 1/4 inch of space in each cavity. Split any remaining mixture between the four cavities. Allow the bars to cool completely before attempting to remove them from the molds. I don't recommend forcing them to cool with a freezer or refrigerator, as this could cause the bars to crack.

Usage & Packaging:
Lotion Bars can be rubbed directly onto dry skin. Doing so after a shower or bath can help to replenish moisture and form a protective barrier over the skin. Lotion Bars can be stored in small airtight tins or plastic containers. When giving them as gifts, try packaging them in Small Cello Bags, as pictured above. Tiny red heart stickers look adorable polka dotted on the package, but these bags can also be embellished with ribbons, paper, or other crafty goodies.

*For a more natural product, these Lotion Bars can be left unscented. The rich aroma of Cocoa Butter in the recipe, combined with the slight fatty aroma of Raspberry Seed Oil will create a subtle, pleasant scent. The Jojoba Wax Beads can also be removed from the recipe, and replaced with additional Beeswax. To add a natural color to your Lotion Bars, try infusing 1/2 teaspoon of Alkanet Root Powder in the warm oils.
